State of Maryland appeals overturned conviction in Adnan Syed case. The Attorney General’s Office filed an Application for Leave to Appeal with the Court of Special Appeals, asking the higher court to review Judge Martin Welch’s decision to grant Syed a new trial. Welch decided that Syed’s original attorney’s failure to thoroughly cross-examine the unreliable cell tower evidence that was the crux of the case amounted to ineffective assistance of counsel.
